Kia ora I'm Byron. I am an award-winning landscape photographer. I grew up in the South Island of New Zealand loving nature and travel. My interest in landscape photography is inspired by a childhood spent in the South Island, featuring countless week-long trips during the holidays traversing the deep south of Otago and Canterbury, or up the rugged West Coast. Mum would pack the car with endless amounts of Tupperware containers of home baking and club sandwiches, sleeping bags, and suitcases jammed deep into the foot well. It came from looking out the window, watching epic Mountain Ranges, Lakes and Valleys go by while Dad played Phil Coulters, Paul Simon or Dire Straits on the tape deck. There were what felt like endless hours of staring at the white strip on the road to stave off car sickness due to the windiness of Arthurs Pass or the steep climbing roads of the Lindis Pass. It was a childhood spent taking the surroundings of the South Island a little bit for granted.
It’s only later in life that I began to reflect on the great gift my parents gave by introducing me to the unique beauty and epic character of New Zealand. From here my passion for landscape photography really intensified. My goal with my photography is to recapture those rugged landscapes I spent so many years being surrounded by and the nostalgic memories that come with it, before the ever-changing elements see places like Fox Glacier for example, disappear for good.
I travel a lot throughout New Zealand and abroad and always have my camera at the ready for something that catches my eye. Each year I plan trips away to keep learning and refocusing my goals in photography. I'm inspired by visiting new places and new cultures, from the landscapes to the buzz of the cities, from the people to the food, and when I'm not out travelling or taking pictures I can usually be found at home planning my “next trip”.
